, in denver last night. president obama and mitt romney going toe to toe on critical issues, like the economy and health care. and by most accounts, it was mitt romney who emerged the victor. lots of debate analysis ahead on "starting point." we'll be talking live with john mccain of arizona and rand paul of kentucky. from team obama, we'll be speaking with martin o'malley and campaign spokeswoman, jen psaki. plus, obama's former economic adviser, austan goolsbee. first, though, a look at the instant reaction from the debate in the cnn/orc poll, of debate watchers taken right after the debate, 67% say they think romney won. 25% only thought the president won. cnn's dana bash joins us this morning to go over some of the hits and some of the misses. good morning. >> good morning. well, i'm here in new york, so maybe we should talk about what happens, how you get to carnegie hall, practice, practice, practice. and is that clearly is what helped the mitt romney. he spent a lot of time practicing, really for the past month doing these mock debates. and when it comes to the president, he was rusty.

% or partisans. democracy first, a democratic polling firm. romney has a good night, but no evidence of changing the game. i agree with them completely on the first that romney had a good night. i think we will have to see a minute whether it changed the game. walmart sponsored their walmart focus groups with momentum analysis, a democratic polling firm, one of glen's partners together. they suggested a monster lot of walmart moms, it was a win for romney. the people in the groups were divided between a win for romney or a tie. on the other hand, it said they were disappointed with the president's performance. they do not think he made the case for how another four years would be better. they made the point that neither one of these guys really connected with voters on a personal level, but i think romney did a superior job of debating it. we will be seeing a lot of reviews over the next few days. i think the key thing for us to watch, no question mitt romney won the debate. how much does this change things? in national polls he will get a few points out of this. the more relevant. is that, numb

to mitt romney. and you watched mitt romney on -- on -- two nights ago talk about his fake ideas for america. what seemed surprising to me watching that debate is it is almost like mitt romney made up a new economic plan about an hour and a half before the debate and decided to talk about that instead of what he had been talking about for the last year and a half. >> i had never seen that mitt romney before. i don't think his staff had seen that mitt romney before. i don't think mitt romney knew what he was going to say until he said it. and it seemed to be working so he went with it. if you are just going to make stuff up and completely pander to the audience and say whatever you need to say to get elected, you going to do well in a dee bait. >> jamal: let's take on one big issue from that debate. i follow this stuff pretty closely, and i felt like mitt romney just refused to sit down on a fact which pretty much everybody snows true which is he wants to give a $5 trillion tax cut that will go to benefiting the wealthy and hurt the middle class, right? >>

't the president's best night, that's for sure. and governor romney to his credit showed up ready to play and really put in a good performance. but we've seen that mitt romney can do quite well in a debate, in a controlled environment where he's had a lot of time to practice, where he's had an opportunity to sort of think a lot about what he wants to say and frame his arguments and he went out and delivered. but now he's going to have to go out there and defend those arguments, going to have to go out on the stump and talk to people, talk to reporters. again, articulate the vision that john was talking about which he's been unable to do. we'll see if he's able to take that performance out of a controlled environment and i think the onus is on the president as well. he certainly came out swinging yesterday and did a lot of things people wished he had done at the debate on wednesday night, but he's going to have to make the same argument. >> well, the next two debates will be fascinating, as will the vp debate. for now, thank you both very much. >>> coming up, education was a key part of th
